FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I pay by credit card?
Yes! Though there is a 2% charge on these transactions, eftpos use is free however or to pay by cash there are two ATMs in Raglan just a short stroll away.
Do I need my own bedding?
No. all of our accommodation beds are completely made up with professionally laundered sheets and pillowcases, douvets, pillows and in the wintertime there are extra blankets to keep you warm and comfortable.
Is there parking available?
Yes, we do have some off street spots available and there is safe parking on the street outside the backpackers. As with anywhere in New Zealand, please don’t leave valuables in your car.
Do you have internet/wireless?
We have free internet at the hostel via two, free-to-use computers. Wifi is available anywhere in Raglan town (including our backpackers) through wannawifi (you pay for this) however there is also free wifi available at the library which is less than 1 minute’s walk from our hostel.
When is the best time to surf?
There is no dedicated surf season in Raglan, there is usually waves to be found at any time of the year, though with any activity it’s difficult to predict the best conditions, we’ll do our best to advise you of the surf conditions throughout your stay with us.
Can you really learn to surf at the backpackers?
Yes! We’ve introduced countless travelers to the joys and buzz of surfing, all you need is a bit of willpower, a positive attitude and a little instruction.
Do you really have a spa pool, sauna, and kayaks free to use?
Do I need a car?
Our backpackers is situated a minute’s walk from all that Raglan town has to offer, including cafes, bars, art galleries, unique gift stores, walks, etc… We do have a hostel car to provide transportation to the nearby Ngarunui surf beach (5 minute drive), but having your own car does give you a bit more flexibility to explore at your discretion.
Do you rent equipment to non-guests?
Yes, we are happy to rent kayaks and surfboards to visitors not staying with us, though first preference usually goes to our guests. Large groups wanting to kayak should give us a bit of notice.
What is the difference between the Holiday House and the Backpackers?
There isn’t much difference between the two, the backpacker accommodation rooms all open onto the central courtyard with hammoks, the house as larger rooms with less people, but both have access to the same amenities.
Do you offer van sites?
We do on occasion take vans, though it is on an availability basis, please email or ring for availability.
Are there any discounts available for long-term stays, students…
During our high season we are unable to offer any discounts as we already have some of the lowest prices around. The best way to save money on accommodation in NZ is the join the BBH hostel association. See at www.backpack.co.nz
Is your accommodation suitable for families?
That’s a tricky question, sometimes yes and sometimes no. It’s probably best to call us and have a chat, but in general we don’t take families with small children as they tend to find it a bit unsuitable, but if you’ve traveled in lots of backpackers before and are comfortable with the arrangement then we might work for you.
Do you take groups?
Only in the off season, May- August. During the busy season unfortunately our facilities are unsuitable for groups of 5 or more in most instances.
Is your backpackers eco-friendly?
We strive to be as low-impact and eco-friendly on the environment as possible. We offer great recycling (we manage to recycle over 70% of our rubbish!) and use environmentally-based cleaning products where possible, line-dry most of the hostel washing, use a wetback system to heat our holiday house and its hot water at the same time, try to provide opportunities to cut back on packaging such as free re-usable shopping bags for guests and selling individual free range (no packaging!) local eggs, grow salad greens and herbs that are free for guests to use (once again to reduce packaging) and co-sponsor green section of the local paper and support local organic and green causes.
Can we cook our own food?
Yes, we have two kitchens for the exclusive use of our guests with everything you need to make delicious meals and even some tasty baked goods. Both kitchens have full sized ovens, fridges, microwaves, all pots and pans, blenders, cutlery, cups, baking dishes etc.
Do your rooms have en-suites?
No, all of our facilites are shared.
Is there somewhere to store my surfboard?
Yes, we do have a rack for guests bringing their own gear.
Is it easy to get a job in Raglan?
This all depends on who you are, and what time of year you are looking. There is no fruit picking in this area, it is cafe, retail or cleaning work.
There are jobs to be had, and with a bit of effort and persistence you may very well get lucky, but be advised that most employers are looking for a few months commitment, a high level of english proficiency and a can-do attitude.
Do you have a minimum stay policy?
Yes, for advance bookings during the high season we do have a two-night minimum, we find it’s much easier to enjoy all that Raglan has to offer in at least two days and most of our guests end up staying longer than they intended, we will take one-night bookings if we have space on the day, just call or walk-in.
